| The Lititz Fire Company is reminding everybody of the importance of keeping snow cleared away from the fire hydrants. During the unfolding moments of a fire is not the time for us to try to locate a fire hydrant and then have to remove the snow from around it. If you have a fire hydrant on or near your property please take the time to clear the snow from all sides of the hydrant and provide a path from both the street and sidewalk to the hydrant.
We understand, especially with the recent snowfalls, that this is another chore that can be easily overlooked or avoided. The minutes we save by not having to clear snow from a hydrant may mean a drastic difference in the outcome of our firefighting efforts. The house you may save may be your own.
If you can, share the work with a neighbor or two. If the fire hydrant is on your property please take the lead and ask your neighbors to help with this job. Every fire hydrant serves many more people than just the property owner where the hydrant is located.
We are sometimes asked if clearing the hydrants is the responsibility of the fire company. Although fire hydrants are used exclusively by the fire company they are not the responsibility of the fire company. We have well over 400 fire hydrants in our fire district. There is no way humanly possible that we could ever clear the snow from that many hydrants. This is a task that needs to be divided and conquered by all the citizens of Lititz and Warwick Township to help assure everybody's safety. |
